FACIAL AESTHETIC ENHANCEMENTS
The scope of dentistry has expanded to include treating the face that frames the smile. This can be the final piece of perfecting the smile using dental Botox or fillers to enhance the look of the teeth. Botulinum toxin helps to relax the lines that cause wrinkles, can help lower a high lip with a smile, or even help to relax the muscles that cause clenching and headaches. Fillers are a great way to replace collagen that is lost as we age, making it seem like you have turned back the hands of time and regained your youthful appearance. Common places to use these gel-like substances are marionette lines, “parentheses,” and lines around the mouth, and they can also enhance the fullness and shape of the lips.

BOTOX
These treatments relax the facial muscles that cause the harsh expression lines between your brows, crow’s feet, and frown lines. Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting, or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. Nothing will refresh your face quite like using this cosmetic treatment! Results usually take about 3-10 days and last from 3-6 months.
The benefits of Botox treatment go beyond relaxing facial expression muscles to reduce wrinkles—it can also help with facial pain, painful headaches, and clenching of teeth. Researchers have found that Botox injections into the chewing muscles can block the signals that tell these muscles to contract, relieving troublesome teeth grinding and clenching. Often, patients have reported that by treating between the eyes and the forehead, they experience relief from headaches. We can even do a more thorough treatment to relieve some of the trigger points in the back of the neck or top of the shoulders.
We will do a consult with each patient to make sure we know their desired outcomes of the treatment. Depending on the areas that we treat, it will determine the price. Generally, it will be $12 a unit, but prices may decrease if multiple areas are treated. There is also another botulinum toxin product on the market called Xeomin that can be used at $11 a unit.
The treatment is a simple procedure that only takes about 20 minutes to complete, and we can do the treatments at your hygiene appointment, for example. Some patients receiving Botox in dentistry with BOTOX® Cosmetic or Xeomin report the injections feel like a pinch. After the procedure, patients can immediately resume their normal activities. Some minor pain, swelling, or bruising at or around the injection site may occur, but it is usually minimal and resolves quickly.
It is not a permanent treatment; if you discontinue treatment, the moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines will gradually return. It is recommended to have the treatments done every 3-4 months to maintain the desired results.
FILLERS
As we age, the cellular changes that occur in our skin begin to accelerate, resulting in our skin losing a little of its firmness and elasticity with each passing year. This loss is mostly due to the depletion of collagen, the protein responsible for skin’s elasticity; however, lifestyle and environmental factors, such as stress, climate, and smoking, can also contribute to the occurrence of wrinkles.
Thankfully, we now have a way to reverse these signs of aging with JUVÉDERM fillers. They are an injectable, which means that a very fine needle will guide the gel just under the dermal layer and into the area to be treated. Before JUVÉDERM is administered, a local anesthetic or topical cream may be used to numb the area. Because dermal fillers are a minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedure, recovery time is minimal and provides immediate results. These results are immediate and last from 6 to 18 months. Patients may experience some bruising and swelling at the injection sites.
In addition to enhancing facial aesthetics, these treatments can complement dental procedures by improving symmetry and structure. Patients undergoing orthodontic therapy may find that fillers help balance facial proportions during their treatment. Whether you’re considering cosmetic dentistry or a subtle enhancement, our dental professionals are here to guide you through the best options available.
Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Botox
How can botulinum toxin help with dental treatment?
Botulinum toxin is commonly used in dental treatment to manage conditions like teeth grinding (bruxism), TMJ disorders, and excessive clenching. By injecting small amounts into the jaw muscles, it helps reduce involuntary contractions that can cause discomfort, enamel wear, and even headaches. This approach can complement other oral health treatments, providing long-term relief from tension and pain.
Are Botox injections safe for relaxing facial muscles in dentistry?
Yes, Botox injections are FDA-approved and considered safe when administered by trained professionals in a dental office. They help relax facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles, jaw tension, and headaches. These treatments can also prevent excessive grinding or clenching, which can damage teeth over time. Proper consultation with a dentist ensures the injections are used effectively for both aesthetic and functional benefits.
Can Botox help with chronic pain related to TMJ and muscle tension?
Absolutely! Many patients suffering from chronic pain due to TMJ disorders or excessive muscle tension find relief with botulinum toxin treatments. By relaxing overactive jaw muscles, Botox can ease pain, reduce inflammation, and minimize the frequency of tension headaches. It is a non-invasive alternative to more extensive procedures, offering relief without major downtime.
How does dental Botox impact oral health and overall facial aesthetics?
Dental Botox can improve oral health by addressing issues like bruxism, TMJ disorders, and facial asymmetry. Beyond function, it also enhances facial aesthetics by smoothing wrinkles and improving muscle balance. When used alongside other dental procedures, such as orthodontics or cosmetic treatments, it helps achieve a well-balanced and youthful appearance.
Why should I visit a dental office for Botox treatments instead of a cosmetic clinic?
A dental office is an excellent place for Botox treatments because dentists have extensive knowledge of facial muscles, jaw muscles, and how they interact with teeth and bite alignment. Unlike general cosmetic practitioners, dental professionals understand how Botox integrates with dental treatment plans, ensuring both functional and aesthetic improvements. Their expertise helps provide more precise and effective injections tailored to your needs.
